A series of staged self-portraits that introduce both a constructed character and a

potentially bizarre and dark narrative to the viewer, without providing any concluding details.

In Characters, Carlton uses costuming, theatrical performance techniques, and props to transform herself into a range of invented personas. Each figure is staged within a constructed environment, suggesting bizarre and dark scenarios that exist somewhere between reality and fantasy. Drawing on the traditions of character studies in theatre and cinema, these photographs explore identity as performance while challenging traditional narrative structures.
