She Who Horrifies
(2025 - ongoing)
A series of staged self-portraits influenced by feminine monstrous characters in horror cinema,
blending glamour shots and abjection to critique cultural ideals of femininity.

In She Who Horrifies, Carlton performs archetypal characters (Miss Check, Miss Sayers, Miss White, Miss Morgan, Miss Valentine, Miss Fitzgerald, and Miss MacNeil). The photographs are styled with the aesthetics of glamour photography while alluding to horror and abjection. Drawing on Barbara Creed's theory of the monstrous feminine and visual cues from horror cinema, these portraits remix idealized beauty to critique the cultural taboos embedded in femininity.
