Touch Grass
(2023)
video installation
9:41 min

A video installation consisting of an astroturf rug and a camcorder connected to a CRT monitor playing a video of a character slowly transforming into a clown, erupting in chaotic behavior, and cutting to a clip from Rick Astley's Never Gonna Give You Up music video.

Touch Grass is a self-portrait video performance showcased in a low-fi installation filmed entirely on a Hi8 camcorder. The video features a character painstakingly transforming into a clown with face paint, a wig, gloves, and costuming. This slow pace abruptly shifts as she runs around the outdoor environment and falls to the ground, and the clown's scream hard cuts to an unexpected rick roll. Borrowing online concepts such as "touch grass", the clown emoji, and rick roll pranks, this work highlights the absurdity of virtual identity and performance.
